Hi my name is Lauren! I'm a 2nd year computing science student at Simon Fraser University. My academic interests include Artificial Intelligence, human-robot interaction, and computer vision.
I also really enjoy painting, reading, volleyball, playing the piano and guitar, and tropical beach activities.
My project is called "Aware Like an Animal."
The goal is to create an interactive stimuli dataset for programmers and designers to use towards making believable, interaction-aware virtual characters.
Working in a small team with 2 grad students and Professors Lawrence Kim and Angelica Lim of SFU, we designed and implemented a Wizard-of-Oz study and observed 1170 non-verbal interactions between 20 participants and 6 virtual characters and collected the stimuli participants used to challenge the characters physically, emotionally, and socially.
With minimal instructions, participants interacted freely with characters in various morphologies (banana, pufferfish, toilet, penguin, robot, human). We present a visual stimuli codebook of 137 unique non-verbal behavior actions used by humans to test the virtual characters.
As the undergraduate research assistant, I analyzed and annotated participants' videos. I helped to edit and proofread the paper, and participated and collaborated in meetings. I also created a supplementary video overviewing our project to submit to CHI '24 and UbiComp '24.
